The Public Advocate has an important role in systemic advocacy. This means we explore and recommend changes to systems and laws in South Australia.
Recent work
The Public Advocate has lobbied for:
- the Community Visitors Scheme
- improvements in Forensic Science and Disability Services
- new approaches to restrictive practices
- amendments to the Mental Health Act 2009 and the Guardianship and Administration Act 1993.
The OPA has also participated in project work to:
- support reforms in Advance Care Directives
- promote and protect the rights of vulnerable adults
- identify the needs of family who are appointed as guardians
- trial supported decision making to help vulnerable individuals to make their own decisions
- provide resources to substitute decision-makers.
